Wuff Dog Safety – Travelling with Your Dog (UK & Europe)

Planning a trip with your dog can be a wonderful experience, but preparation is key to keeping them safe, comfortable, and stress-free.

Before You Travel

  • Ensure your dog is fit to travel and up to date with vaccinations

  • Carry your dog’s vet book / passport (required for Europe)

  • Check your pet insurance covers travel abroad

  • Research and Google local vets near your destination

  • Make sure your dog’s microchip details are up to date

What to Take in the Car

  • Secure dog car seat belt or crate (legal requirement for safety)

  • Comfortable dog bed or blanket (familiar scent helps reduce anxiety)

  • Food, treats, and enough for the full journey

  • Fresh water and a travel water bowl

  • Dog coat (for colder climates)

  • Favourite toys for comfort

  • Towel (for wet or muddy dogs)

Safety Essentials

  • Collar with your telephone number only (avoid using your dog’s name)

  • Lead – keep your dog on lead at all times in unfamiliar areas

  • Never leave your dog in a parked car – temperatures rise rapidly

  • Use pet-safe sun cream (ears, nose, belly for light-coated dogs)

  • Apply paw balm and nose balm to prevent dryness or cracking

Health & Medication

  • Pack any regular medication

  • Bring sickness tablets if your dog suffers with travel sickness

  • Include a basic pet first aid kit if possible

On the Journey

  • Walk your dog before setting off

  • Plan regular toilet, water, and stretch breaks

  • Never feed a large meal just before travel (reduces sickness risk)

  • Keep the car well ventilated and cool

At Your Destination

  • Check the area for hazards before letting your dog explore

  • Search “local vets near me” on arrival for peace of mind

  • Be aware of lost dog services in the area

  • Keep routines as normal as possible (feeding, walks, sleep)

Extra Safety Tips

  • Avoid letting your dog roam off-lead in unknown places

  • Watch for traffic, wildlife, and unfamiliar environments

  • Ensure accommodation is dog-safe and secure

  • Keep doors, gates, and balconies safely closed

If Something Goes Wrong

  • Contact a local vet immediately

  • Have emergency numbers saved in your phone

  • Do not delay seeking help if your dog shows signs of illness or distress

Stay safe, travel prepared, and enjoy your journey together.
