As the weather warms up, grass seeds become a hidden danger for dogs. They are small, sharp and easily missed — but they can cause serious problems if not removed quickly.
Grass seeds can lodge in your dog’s paws, ears, eyes or even be inhaled.
Where Grass Seeds Cause Problems
• Between the toes• In the paw pads• Inside the ears• In the eyes• Up the nose• Under the skin
They are designed to burrow and can move deeper into the body if left untreated.
Signs a Grass Seed May Be Stuck
• Excessive licking of a paw• Sudden limping• Swelling between toes• Redness or discharge• Head shaking• Ear scratching• Sneezing repeatedly• Sudden eye irritation
If ignored, infection and abscesses can develop.
Why Grass Seeds Are Dangerous
Grass seeds have pointed ends that allow them to travel in one direction only — forwards. They do not break down inside the body and will continue to migrate, causing pain and infection.
Many cases require a vet job to remove them safely.
How to Reduce Risk
• Avoid long, dry grass where seeds are visible• Check paws carefully after every walk• Trim excess fur between paw pads• Groom regularly during summer months• Remove any visible seeds immediately
If You Suspect a Grass Seed
• Do not dig deeply into the skin yourself• Contact your vet promptly• Early treatment prevents complications
Grass seeds may be small, but they can cause serious harm if left untreated.
Stay alert during warmer months and check your dog after every walk.
